This has been an incredible year for Ravinia's library , affectionately known as The Tree House, by our staff and students! We have worked on special curriculum projects, welcomed a renowned guest author, and brought in new technology.
The Tree House partnered closely this year with all grade levels to teach and conduct research. Kindergarten worked with their fifth grade buddies to research a non-fiction topic of their choice and write a short report, with illustrations. First grade conducted multiple author studies and learned about penguin habitats. Second grade did multiple research projects. The two most notable research projects done by second grade were on weather and habitats. Our third grade students perfected their searching skills with Destiny and successfully conducted research on pioneers and Chicago. Fourth grade worked with us to learn more about immigration and Illinois. Finally, fifth grade used the library resources throughout the year in their study of American history, human body, weather and poetry.
We had the privledge of welcoming our guest author, Patricia Polacco in the fall. Patricia shared her books with our students, giving insight into the writing process. She also gave a personal speech about her childhood memories of being bullied and teased for not being a strong student in school. She made a lasting impression on all students, staff and parents who attended her program.
At the tail end of the school year, we have purchased new digital cameras for our classrooms and are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our newPrometheam Board.
